How can I add the shape properties to a mask on a solid? I’d like an identical shape as a mask instead of a shape layer.

    Best way to do this?

    Thanks.

Select the shape layer, then on the menu bar Layer -> Auto-trace.

Also, if you just need your shape layer to be a mask, you could just put it above the layer you want to mask and change the bottom layers track matte to alpha matte.

    Thank you!

I had tried a track matte but it wasn’t working.
When you suggested track matte, I tried again and found I couldn’t see the contents inside the shape layer because the gradient fill was low. Raised gradient fill to 100% and it worked great. 🙂

Auto trace is also a good solution. Of course there is much more control with the shape layer and track matte.
