Does there exist a plugin that can replace each pixel with a custom image, centered to that pixel and with the appropriate luminance and tint, with the option to screen blend (or multiply, etc) where they intersect? I’ve tried to illustrate here with some enlarged mockups.

As an example input, some scattered pixels in white, grey, red and blue.

Pixels replaced with a custom image of a white box. The color pixels become color boxes, which add to magenta where they intersect.

    Replaced with a gradient line.

I figure you could do all sorts of interesting blur, bloom, bokeh and star filter effects with this method, I just have no idea what it would be called or if it exists!

Each pixel on the grid would be represented by the custom image, which would be bigger, and thus would overlap with adjacent pixels.

Photoshop sort of does this with the Shape Blur filter, but that’s limited to black and white vectors shapes.

If you want to achieve this within AE, I would check this out:

    > Anything smaller than a pixel can’t exist.

??? He’s not saying anything about the size of a pixel. The example diagrams are really clear, he’s suggesting what would effectively be custom image maps for the iris shape of a lens blur… which would be amazing, hope it is somehow possible tho I don’t know of any existing AE plugin which does this.
