I was wondering if anyone had any tips on creating a certain effect. It was used a lot recently on some NBC promos, where characters walk from behind, then through text, and as they pass, it sort of parts around them.

I was wondering if this effect was achieved just by animating a mask around the people, or if there were some other techniques going on there.

Here’s an example of what I mean:

    Thanks for any tips.

yeah, it’s a combination of “rotoscoping” and “tracking” – so basically drawing a mask around the talent. If you do a search of the forums and tutorials for both of these techniques you will be well on the right track to creating an effect like this.

Have a look, then if you have more questions ask again…

    good luck!

I bet they’re just animating masks individually, moving the mask and making it grow just with Mask Shape or Mask Expansion for growth. That’s how they get the gradual (what over 5 frames ?) moving through the text.

I like the look of it.
