Cubix trouble
Hi,
we are experiencing a rather cumbersome issue with our Cubix Desktop Xpander Elite. Our setup is as following:
inside the GPU-xpander we have 3 GTX Titans in slot 1, 2 and 3. Slot 4 is empty. The GPU-xpander is connected to a MacPro 5,1 6-Core Intel Xeon. Inside the Mac we have a GTX570 on slot1, the GPU-xpander-PCI-card on slot2, a Blackmagic decklink card on slot3 and a 10gbE-card in slot4.Until today everything worked fine – all relevant applications showed all 3 GTX Titans well. Today editing on the machine in FCP7 was very strange – we experienced several hiccups in audio and several crashes. We did a system update to 10.9.2 and updated the decklink driver which didn’t help. So I made a quick look inside system profiler and found that only two GTX Titans showed up. I suspected that maybe one of the Titans was damaged so I unplugged all of them and tried them one by one. Each time shutting down the mac, changing cards, booting up, checking in system profiler.
I found out that it couldn’t be one of the cards because every card worked in some combination. I just couldn’t get three cards to work, though.

System Profiler shows one cardIt’s also quite strange that as soon as any GTX Titan is plugged into the Cubix, System Profiler show „There was an error while gathering PCI card information“ in the PCI cards tab. When all GTX Titans are removed, or if I disconnect the Cubix from the mac, System Profiler shows all connected PCI cards fine.
I assume the Cubix or the corresponding PCI-card has some issue.
Please help, as we are in the middle of a grading job and we rely on our gpu performance.Best,

Welcome to 10.9.2! Have the same type of issues with my Cyclone expansion chassis. Not a hardware issue from my experience. I haven’t heard of a fix, maybe 10.9.3?! I have an internal Titan Black and just use that for now, will be trying another Ti Black in the chassis soon and will report back.

No, that’s normal behaviour. I think it has something to do with the OS not being able to make sense of what is attached to the PCIe buss other than to identify card types in the Graphics and Displays dialog.
I would not touch 10.9 with a ten foot pole. Seems to be more iOS than ever, and its real advantage (at least to Apple) is to make the store more available.

For the life of me, I have no idea everyone just dying to use Mavericks. People upgrade to 10.9 and then they are whining, when their nVidia cards all of a sudden stop working, when with 10.8 the same hardware was working just fine. Doh…

Same situation, three titans in Cubix, only difference they are Black edition. Under 10.9.2, they show up just two cards. I tried with 10.8.5 (better for me, I use NFS and Mavericks has many problems on it), but system not booting, keeps popping up a message “There was a problem…” then system restarts. Nvidia drivers work only in 10.9.2, so 10.9.1 or 10.9 didn’t work.
Anyone got working a Titan Black under 10.8.5?Thanks!

What’s a X280? And what have you gained by installing Mavericks, that you couldn’t get on ML other than some additional grief? How was Resolve 10.1.2 working out for you?

An x280 is a 280x.
I gained working gpus in mavericks that didn’t work in mountain lion.
Zero grief. So far. Completing client supervised jobs though.

Hm, weren’t we talking about troubles with nVida cards and Mavericks? Why confuse the issue by introducing OpenCL cards and Mavericks into this conversation?

If you need a better GPU, the old Titans are no longer available from EVGA, not sure about others, so the Ti Black is your only option. To use that you need 10.9.2.
The pioneers get the arrows (and sometimes the clients appreciation/loyalty), the settlers get the land (and sometimes fall behind.)
I have had no problems with my Ti Black and 10.9.2 and a single card kills it with 4k.
