I’ve noticed that the new MacBook Pros have an Nvidia display card now.
Last Sept I got a new MacBook Pro and CS5.5 thinking I would have Mercury Playback perfomance, but I was dissapointed to find the performance
inadequate to do things like real time green screen editing and layers of video. Does anyone know if the new MacBook Pros are up to speed now?

My other options are to save up for a MacPro then add the $1000 Nvidia card, or go back to a PC. After 5 years on the mac I am very invested in Mac Software, so I would like to stay on Mac.

    Thanks

I’ve a new rMBP and all I did was add the CUDA drivers and edit the supported cards list to add the 650M and things fly. It also helps that I’m running a 4 drive OCZ Vertex 4 array via Thunderbolt with the Echo Express Pro and the ATTO R680…

You will need to edit the supported CUDA cards list in the various app bundles since the GT650M is so new, but it works great. Here’s a howto that will provide the details:

Did the same as Tim- sans the Thunderbolt Atto 680. Great performance after hacking the PP CUDA TXT doc. Did go with the non Retina 15″ due to expandability issues. Can add more RAM, new hard drive to non Retina MBP than the Retina version.

This sounds good, although it looks a bit complicated. seems like you have all the details.
I’ll start looking into trading in my MacBook for a current one, with Nvidia.

    Thanks

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed Alan and pre-congrats on your new MBP. I’ve done two jobs on the new 15″ retina MBP, using a 4TB Thunderbolt drive, and I’ve been very impressed with the performance. In many ways it outperforms my regular MacPro system with a Sonnet raid array.

I wasn’t aware of the hacks that are listed above and will be trying those right away.
