Just ran into this last week, read stories and workarounds
at various forums. Here’s what I did to get around it.
This might be helpful for anyone with the issue:

    Problem:
media pending when you want to preview from a multi-cam sequence with long recording times (1hr etc…)
From some recent canon and sony cameras (AVC-HD), and not playing back multi-cam sequence.

    Solution:
right click the first clip in multi-cam sequence that shows media pending, choose “reveal in project”

This should now select the source sequence with all video tracks with different cameras.

right click the same clip, choose “replace with clip from bin”

    This will connect the clips.

To fix the render problem, go to the source sequence with all camera angles again,
select all, then choose RENDER AUDIO. Allow the audio to render.

go back to multicam sequence and play – render will come up and progress
quickly instead of being stuck, doing nothing.

    playback in multicam now works.

This was on MAC but I believe it happens on PC version as well.

I was having serious issues and have found the source of it. I had numerous sequences that were taking a huge amount of time to export audio or video. I had multicam sequences and I was getting “rendering required files ” messages all of the time which were a total pain. The sequences I had were around an hour but nothing seemed unusual. This was a dslr project and the audio was recorded separately as wave files.

After struggling with numerous delays it finally dawned on me that the external audio files were recorded at 44.1 while all of my timelines were at 48k. This was the entire source of the problem! I then took all of my audio files and converted them to 48k, replaced the old ones and all of the delays, and rendering required files errors vanished!

Pretty serious PPro error if you ask me. A simple audio variation and PPro comes to a crawl. While PPro converts 24 bit to 32bit it evidently ignores sample rate until render and at that point it seems to need to render the entire source file before it can do anything.

I’m glad I figured this out it was driving me crazy.
