  • CS4 RAM…only using 10% for renders

Posted by Oli Sansom on February 4, 2009 at 11:42 pm

Hi all, running AECS4 on my MPB C2D 2.4 with 4gb RAM.

When rendering, even after purging the ram, the maximum RAM being used displayed at the bottom sits at 10-11%. I’ve read around and tried playing with the multiprocessing options, and nothing seems to work.

I have it selected, and allocate anywhere between 1GB and 2Gb to each processer, yet still no change in the amount used!

    Cheers

you’re talking about the ram usage in the render queue as a comp renders..?

that just means that for that comp, ae only needed 10% of your ram, not that it was limited to only 10%. you’ll find that if the comp has a larger frame size (like 1920×1080), uses lots of motion blur or uses more memory intensive effects (like many of the time effects) the ram usage will go up.

the ram usage is primarily useful when you are experiencing crashes during renders. if you notice the a render crashes as the ram usage value hits the max ram cache setting (in memory and cache settings) that is often a sign that ae is having trouble purging the ram cache. when that happens, you’ll want to evoke the secret pref and set ae to purge frames at regular intervals to avoid the crash.

I have exactly the same problem, and I can’t believe that the composition doesn’t need to use more that 10% of the RAM
I have just switched from CS3 to CS4, and I am finding that compositions which took 1-2 hours to render on CS3 are taking 15 hours on CS4.

    I have a quad-core 2.4Ghz processor and 8Gb RAM on Windows XP 64.
When I try to render using the multiprocessing option the render uses just 10% of the RAM and takes hours.
When I turn multiprocessing off, After Effects is able to use 60% of the RAM, but it still takes as long.

It cannot be that the switch to CS4 has significantly REDUCED my working efficiency and output.
Any help to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
