CRT Monitor
I am doing some editing in HD but right now I only have an SD monitor. My IT guy asked if we could use a CRT monitor for veiwing rather than buying an HD monitor. I’m a little confused about the whole monitor situation. All advice is appreciated.

CRT monitors are basically TVs…Catho Ray Tubes. They can be either HD, SD, or both. HD ones are obviously more expensive.
Now, you can view HD on an SD monitor, but only as reference, not for critical HD viewing…and only if you have a capture card that will downconvert the footage from HD to SD. All the major cards do this….AJA, Black Magic, Matrox.

Was your IT guy talking about a computer monitor? That would be less than ideal. Larger monitors may have the right resolution but computer monitors are designed to display a different color space & gamma than HD video.
