    Okay,

Think I have narrowed down my quest for new CRTS to the following options. Wondering
what L’ers may think of the following. While these are not technically “evaluation grade”
monitors they will pressed into duty for moderate color correction and edit viewing. All will be used with component, composite and SDI inputs from VTRS and our Adrenalines.

We still do A LOT of SD work and also check our HD work downconverted to SD.

Sony PVM 20L5 – Have to get it used. Buying new replacement HR tube to make sure I have
strong, problem free SMPTE C phosphors. Have heard bad things about the Sony SDI card,
so going with the ROSS option. Does multiformat HD, which could be nice. 800 lines

Ikegami 80 or 90 series – Can still get it new! Has SMPTE C phosphors. 700 or 900 lines Sold as a Grade 1 master monitor, which is Iki’s sales language for who knows. Thinking this may actually be somewhere between Sony’s PVM and BVM line. Been forever since I used an Iki, and I know many folks swear by them…rather than at them. WHY? Any fans out there. Why should I buy an Iki over a Sony?

JVC DT-V1710CGU – Can still get it new. Value priced. Flat screen. 800 lines. P-22 phosphors though. Little nervous about the color accuracy and uniformity of a moniotr in this price range. But it is multiformat with HD options. Any fans? Anyone using this have anything positive to report?

Just looking for a little real world advice.

This is the monitor for you. No reason for any expansion cards as the analog component handles sd/hd. Comparing both the SDI and analog component options, there’s no reason to spend the money on the ROSS. ALl the Ross does is convert your SDI to analog anyway, and then you plug into the analog component. No need for it unless you don’t have an analog HD component output.

    Jeremy,

Thanks. My only reservation with the 20L5 is dropping 3500.00 on a USED monitor. Otherwise it is our first choice.

Curious to hear some feedback on Iki and JVC.

I hear you, but it’s well worth the price.

I have no experience with the Ikis or JVCs

I have the 14″ version…and paid $1500…well, new. But because that monitor was discontinued, and is a GREAT monitor ($5000 new, BTW) that is a great price.

    Jump on it.

    Hi Chris
I’ve got the JVC DT-V1710CGE and I’m ver happy with it. I use it at the moment for SD, but is ready to set the HD input card.
Ikegamy and Barco has been considered always the best two brands for monitors, but the prices..If you could get an Ikegami for a good price I think wold be a very good investment.
if not, don’t hesitate to buy the JVC.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

Actually, you could get the PVM-20L5/1 new from B&H for right around $3K back when they still had stock.

It’s funny, but the 20L5 has actually appreciated in value since its discontinuation. You can find them selling on eBay selling for $4500 or more.

    Crazy.
