Cross Convert possibilities

October 4, 2006 at 10:22 pmIt has been a while since I worked with an Avid, and when I did it was an older Meridian v11 on machines running MacOS9. So I am not sure as to the capabilities of the later versions. I have been using Final Cut Pro for the past year.
The question I have is, with the latest versions of Avids, can you capture and edit at 720p, but output to 1080p via the hardware? Cross convert from one format to another? I am used to having to capture in the format that I want to export to, after we offline the cut first, of course. So we’d offline at say 15:1, then if we wanted to output to 1080p, we’d have to capture at 1080p.
I am asking this because with FCP I can capture DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 and edit at full resolution. When I lock picture I can, with the use of a Kona 3, cross convert to 1080p 23.98 via the hardware and ouput to HDCAM. I have many companies that I work for that still rely on Avids, and I still enjoy cutting on them, and want to keep up on the tools that I need to know to make a living. I just wanted to know if I could so something similar with the Avid products. Capture DVCPRO HD and work with it at native resolution, then output to 1080p…basically skipping the offline/online workflow.
Thank you for you insight.
Shane
