Correct! FCP uses standard video sizes. And, just like Hollywood movies on DVD, widescreen formats are formatted to fit the standard video screen size, rather than the other way around. If you wish to edit in FCP without the letterbox top and bottom in FCP you will have to scale you video up to fill the frame, thus eliminating portions of the horizontal frame on the right and left. Or, you could try cutting in a seq. set for 2K, at 2:1 and scale accordingly.

You would have to use Compressor or another encoding app to crop to the widescreen format after editing.

Trying the 2K setting. cant crop the frame on horizontal left or right. i intend to make HD output for preview not dvd.

Cropping isn’t the answer — you have scale the video up slightly to make it fit into the 16×9 or 2:1 video frame. However, like a Hollywood DVD, you’re going to end up with letterbox black on the top and bottom, as DVD specs are also very specific about frame size. Widescreen DVDs are all 16×9, period, end of story, none are 2.35:1. or 2:1.
