‘Creating Mask on a Shape Layer’
Hi everyone,
I came across a problem when I have a picture that I want to hide behind inside part of my background footage.
It works well for me when i try to use a solid layer and create a mask on it, then apply alpha track matte to my picture.
but when i try the same method for shape layer (i.e i create a mask on my shape layer and the apply track matte), it doesn’t work out well.
I tried the other way to tackle the problem:
Apply a set matte effect to my masked shape layer. It can’t work as well.Your help will be highly appreciated.

I am not sure why in this case you need a mask on top of a shape, instead of using just the shape but if you want to add a mask on a shape look in the tools panel as your shape is selected and you will see a small icon that when it’s turned on, the path tools will draw a mask instead of a shape.

Why it can’t work for the masked shape layer?
The attached picture is the case I achieved using solid layer.

Thank your for your reply.
I know how to draw a mask on shape layer.
The question is if I want to show a picture underneath the masked shape layer (turned the visibility off and then apply alpha track matte to it), It can’t work like the case when using a mask solid layer.

This should work. Please drag and drop here a screenshot of what happens when you use a shape with a mask as a track matte.

I have figured it out (I need to use a solid shape layer).
Another question is:
How to apply set matte effect?
(When I set the second layer as a track matte, it works well)
(When I apply a set matte effect to the second layer, it cant work. I wanna achieve a track matte effect like below)Thanks again for your help!

A solid layer is one thing, a shape layer is another. A mask on a solid can be a track matte. A shape layer can also. A mask on a shape too. If theres is an issue with your masked shape not helping you get a decent alpha channel then you can drag and drop your aep file here and we can look at it.
Set matte is another way of using a matte for masking. It should usually be instead of track matte and not in addition.
