So it’s been about forever since I’ve had to create a linear-keyable animation (to be keyed in switcher). What I’m stumbling over is how to create a 0-black graphic, while not losing soft edges (I’ve got some lighting effects going on, they’ve got falloff, etc). Starting to think it’s not possible, but it’s been so long, thought I’d throw the question out there.

Ensure that Superblack areas are RGB zero – use Levels for that if required. For all other black areas, set Levels Black Output to 16..

Hmmm…. OK, imagine a lens flare effect over black. There’s hot spots, but there’s also lots of areas where the flare is a soft spot of light over the black. There’s no way this is going to linear key over video, as it’ll key the black that’s behind the soft spots, along with the light effect. Unless I’m having a brain malfunction? In other words, I’m not talking about trying to get “black” graphic sections – that’d be easy.

Think it’s been about 15-20 years since I had to deal with superblack……

If you crunch the input blacks, you should have a pretty good idea which areas attain RGB 0 values. Perhaps you can send them a TIFF for checking purposes.
