  • Creating Letterbox 16:9 DVD in PPRO2

I shot some video with a digital camcorder using the 16:9 setting in my cam. I framed the video just right, but now the problem is when i put it all in Adobe Premiere Pro and go to burn the letterbox (black boxes on top and bottom) doesn’t show up at all. I’ve tried to use the widescreen project setting in my project with widescreen aspect ratio, the widescreen setting with standard aspect ratio, the standard setting with widescreen aspect ratio, the standard with standard aspect and none of these come out right. the boxes come out on the sides, not top and bottom or it is just a full screen view. I want the video to look like a motion picture does with the boxes on top and bottom. There is no “letterbox” template in my titlers as some have suggested and not sure this would help anyway. Seems adding boxes manually will cut even deeper into my video and cut heads off etc. Not sure what to do. Can anyone please help or send me to some site that can help?

You didn’t say what your final product will be output to? If DVD, you just make a 16:9 project, output a 16:9 DVD, most DVD player auto-detect whether the tv set is widescreen or not, and will letterbox if WS, some DVD players require manual setting for the video aspect.

“I’ve tried to use the widescreen project setting in my project with widescreen aspect ratio”

is this what you mean? i’ve already done this. yes, it is for DVD. i’ve burned the dvd (WS project with WS aspect ration) and when i go to play on my tv (61″ samsung dlp) it doesn’t come out right. the setting on my tv is set to 16:9. i then change the tv setting to 4:3 and it still doesn’t come out right. i’m missing something here. i’ve played many dvd’s that i’ve rented on my dvd player and the letterbox comes out correct. so why is my dvd not showing this right?

Using the full frame and a widescreen flag will only work on dvd players that support it. If you want a 4:3 version with black bars, you can make a 4:3 project with layer of black video and the 16:9 footage you want letterboxed layed over top, you may have to scale it to the correct aspect ratio. This way however you lose the pixels from the black bar area rather than using a full screen image.

Can you explain in detail how to get that 16:9 within that 4:3 please.

    Thanks.
