creating animated freeze moving
Posted by Michele Ardito on March 31, 2019 at 12:59 amHi,
I don’t know how is called the effect I want to realize.
In the past, I did with Vegas Pro 13, but I don’t remember exactly how to do it again. I think I used the composition between video tracks but I’m not able to find my notes on it.
I’m talking about this effect:

March 31, 2019 at 4:36 pmInteresting. If someone pointed a gun at my head and told me I had to create an effect like that in vegas or else I think I would have an additional ventilation point. But if I were to give it a go… Maybe you could create something like that through complex masking. But it would be something you would never want to do as the order of difficulty would likely exceed that of even rotoscoping. My next thought would be to use a motion trails effect, either through a 3rd party plugin or using the video bus track. But this will also create visual blur and could not account for the points when the footage freezes in place. Can this be done in vegas? I dunno. I’d be curious to hear what some other long time vegas users think. Grazie you usually get into this visual effect stuff too.

Been out in our garden. Enjoying an early Spring. O…K….. I’ll put me thinking cap back on. Nope, come back with nothing. But, that is a great visual.

March 31, 2019 at 9:28 pmI think I might be able to recreate something similar to the beginning but then when everything starts moving together at the end I’m not sure. I’m gonna try to make a simple version of this to try and figure it out.

April 1, 2019 at 1:45 amExperimented with a few techniques and compositing modes. It’s almost certainly some magical masking going on. The best result came from starting a video Pausing at a point I want to make a copy then setting up a freeze frame at cursor. After that copy the video again to the track below (or make a bunch of copies ahead of time) then make a mask around what you want to stay in place. Then just keep working downward with more video tracks and masks. When it comes time for everything to play that part breaks my brain. Let me know if you or anyone else figures it out.

April 1, 2019 at 9:34 amdon’t want to spend too much time on thinking about that but for the sky part (as i can see there is something going on on the ground as well).
compositing tracks will not do the trick here because clouds are moving so i guess many strange things would occur on the sky using compositing.
so for the sky i propose different aproach:
1
combine parts of the video to make a clean plate of the sky. this would be your bottom track – empty sky
2
key out the sky from a copy of yr video
3
now when you only have a kite on alpha you can easily pile tracks and freeze or move all kites any way you desire
4

Well, yah got my attention. ????
[Paul Beller] “1 combine parts of the video to make a clean plate of the sky. “
How? Or rather to what extent? And yes, if this is possible definitely a way to go.
Your remaining points I get. It’s your Point 1 that I also got to and thought, neah….
OK, there was a VP Project, about a billion years ago, “The Two Cats” Project that depended on an already captured Scene, here that would have been without Cats, and for this Project, NO KITES.

April 1, 2019 at 1:21 pmSo you think keying is involved to make it easier? One thing I noticed is you can see kind of a cross fade happening probably when two tracks are blinding together whenever a new parachute point is made. In my attempt at this I created a short video of a frog face going across a random landscape.

April 1, 2019 at 3:15 pmdue to the quality of the video it is not easy to say, but it looks for me like the sky is on the move from the right to the left and it pauses when first replication occur. if so is true then i am positive that there was a clean plate made for the sky and then sky was keyed out either by keying or by mocha roto. quite a lot of work but of course it is possible to make it within sony vegas plus mocha or some bcc key plugs.

Ah, now I understand your proposed approach and I concur. These in turn predicated on:
1- An already filmed clean plate.
2- Several addition plugs that requires the User to obtain the skills to implement these tasks. I’ve used and could see MOCHA doing a handsome job. I’ve done it with individuals passing in front of an African Elephant, the appear and disappear and reappear. Also a 4×4 rushing away down a dusty track. Fading out the Jeep to only leave its Dust Cloud scrurrying down after the Ghost vehicle. ????

April 1, 2019 at 7:39 pm“An already filmed clean plate”.
golden rule for any filmmaker, whenever you plan to use vfx, always record a clean plate for your shot. but for this task i assumed i only have a raw recorded file and there is no option to re-record. in fact if you planned to key out original sky, you could give there any stock sky available as a clean plate that would correspond with the lighting conditions on the ground
2- Several addition plugs that requires the User to obtain the skills to implement these tasks.
naturally you could mask out the kite frame by frame with your hands without mocha or any other plugin, it is possible, if you have time and patience 🙂
