    Hi there,

Im looking for a cost effective way to create the look of the Nokia Morph video.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX-gTobCJHs

It’s a bit like an storyboard come to life.
I’m pretty sure that I saw some tutorials on this subject earlier but cant find em anymore.

    Anyone a idea?

Aarohon Rabinowitz did a couple tutorials on turning video into a cartoon look. Not exactly the same look as what you posted, but it might get you close. You can search his name in the AE tuts section..

    8core MacPro, 3.0 GHZ, 10GB RAM, OSX 10.5.2
    DualCore G5 2.0 GHZ, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11

    AE7 on both for now.

do a search with “cartoon” or “cartoon effect” as keywords.

You will find lots of good threads on this subject.

The example you posted actually looks as if it is a “cartoon” outline only of a video… with water color like matte layers behind the outlined video.

There are some other subtle effects such as reducing the fps to achieve the onion-skin cartoon creation method in the video as well.

    Great,

I checked out the 3 part tutorial and I understand what he is doing. The great thing is ofc, that is mostly a batch run from Illustrator, really saving time. Maybe if I set up the shot a bit better like he suggested (more light, more make-up, more pixels (HD)) and fiddle around a bit, I might get what im going for.

I was thinking about using Poser but im a bit scary. Never used the program and I cant find any good tuts about it (Creative Cow Standards eh) 🙂

It seems like a more ‘realistic’ cartoon solution compared to the AE + Illustrator one.

Any of you have xp with poser and creating cartoonstyle video?

I don’t know about poser, surely then it will look very “cheap cgi”. I’ve used Aharon’s method and can confirm that using black eyeliner around the contours of the nose and mouth really helps. We also filmed on greenscreen and used the keyed version of the original footage to matte out the all white background that we would otherwise have been left with after the cartoonification process. Having said that, this Nokia vid looks like it has been rotoscoped by hand a la Snow White. If your vid isn’t too long and you slow it down to about 10-12 fps, this might be an idea. If you can be bothered that is – chances are I wouldn’t be…
