Creating an Effect
My editor needs an effect created in the Avid that has an oval center taht is completely transparent which gradients to black at the edges of the frame.
Any suggestions?

I believe there are some packages that offer the Vignetting effect, which is what you describe.
I think you can create something like this using Animatte, drawing a very soft oval. -
