Crazy Audio Sync
Hello to All,
I am doing what should be a very straight forward workflow between FCP and motion. I am on a G5 with all the latest updates of FCP studio 5.0
I am selecting clips from the timeline and then doing a control click to send to motion with embed and launch options selected.
one is a talking head with it’s associated audio on V1 and A1, A2. On V2 I have a series of JPEG photos which i have imported that will be superimposed over the talking head.
The problem is that when it opens in motion and i play the talking head clip is correct in terms of the video track but the audio (from A1 and A2) is way out of sync – it is from a completely different of the clip. It is like I am seeing the proper video from the middle of the master clip and the audio is from the beginning of the master clip. Even if i go back to fcp and select only the talking head clip and it’s audio and do a send to motion i get the same problem. I have also tried selecting other simple video audio clips and I get the same problem. The video is linked to the audio in the clip and I tried both scenarios with the audio as a stereo pair and not – same crazy sync!
Any ideas?

Are there any audio filters applied? Sometimes roundtripping just doesn’t work properly. I’d suggest either not disabling about the audio or if it’s critical for your motion graphics design- export from FCP as a QuickTime animation codec movie and bring that into Motion.

Thanks for your quick response. I do not have any filters applied. this is as “vanilla” a clip as it gets, the one with the audio and the video.
Your suggested workaround is interesting. As I understand it I would just select my V2 contents which are the photographs I want to animate to motion and export the V1 and A1, A2 contents (the talking head) as a quicktime file. I would then import the talking head Quicktime into motion so I can synchronize my animation with the audio?
Would you just select the talking head clip, copy it into a new sequence, and then export as a quicktime movie? I did not quite understand “animation codec movie”. Assuming this is your guidance I’ll try it when I get home tonight.

Yes that would do it. Animation is a QuickTime codec that introduces a low amount of recompression and preserves the alpha channel and is good to use when going back and forth between apps.
