Motion newbie here. I want to do a Text Crawl.
Is it best to keyframe position or use the Text Animation>Crawl effect.

That or create a text box and then add a throw behavior to move it.

quality-wise — in terms of smooth motion, no artifacting, etc., is one way better than another?

The smoothness is more depending on your use of ramps and your rendering quality- whether you render with motion blur, etc.
