My AE CS3 crashes so much, half the time I’m just recovering from crashes. I am using Windows Vista on a laptop with these specs: Core 2 Duo 1.8 ghz, 2 gb RAM, geforce 8600m gt.

    Most common crashes:
-when scrolling the Project window (footage)
-when trying to play the RAM preview (after it has prerendered)
    -when scrolling the timeline

Sometimes when trying to play the RAM preview there is no sound, until I purge the memory and render it again.

Any thoughts on how to improve the situation would be appreciated, thanks!

Unfortunately, the only advice you might get from us would be to switch to XP, since professional graphic apps don’t work well with Vista.

Or you could Google “vista” “after effects” “CS3”, and find links like this:

    Anybody else?

Vista is a total dog. Your best solution IS to move to XP.

Short of that, here’s a few things to try before giving up on Vista:

    1. Rename your user preferences file located at C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\8.0. Upon restart, AE will create a new prefs file, which may help

    2. Disable Aero. One of the hallmarks of Vista, this feature is a total resource hog and is known to cause a lot of issues.

    3. Disable OpenGL. This sometimes cures random crashes, especially if your system doesn’t have a Quadro or other “qualified” OpenGL card.

    4. Go to Edit>Preferences>Memory&Cache and reduce your memory allocation. Sometimes setting this too high can cause issues.
