Crashed Harddrive. Can’t Reinstall FC Studio
I’ve been happily working with my Final Cut Studio 2(upgrade) since March. I had a hard drive crash in my Macbook Pro last week. Now I need to reinstall the software. The problem is I did not write down the serial of my original FC Pro 2 before selling it at a garage sale. I honestly thought I’d never need it. What can I do now? I obviously need a working serial to perform the upgrade again. The Studio 2 is registered with Apple. Does that help when the FC Pro 2 isn’t?

I’m sorry but that is probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. You need that serial number every time you upgrade your software. What you did was completely illegal.
If you sold the software, that means you no longer use it. You cannot sell the software discs and continue to the use that same software on your computer. Apple is under no obligation to help you at all. The new owner of the software is now the owner of that serial number.
How do you propose to re-install the software if you sold it? You cannot keep “backup” copies of software you do not own.
You only legal option is to purchase a new copy of Studio 2.

Maybe you should read a little more carefully. I’m trying to reinstall the STUDIO 2 upgrade software, not the old FC PRO 2. Once a hard drive is changed out, the upgrade can no longer read a previous install – so I needed the old serials.

You’re still out of luck. You sold off the software, the serial numbers now belong to the new owner. You have no rights to use any older version of the software if you no longer own the software.
I still own all my copies of Final Cut Pro all the way back to FCP 1.2.5. Legally you’re supposed to retain ownership of all versions of the software if you’re purchasing and using the upgrades.

Walter is right, you sold the software, therefore you have no longer have the right to use the SN from the old software.
You will ether need buy a new copy of the full studio, or find a old version that you can purchase, in order to have a legal copy.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!
