CPU problem
Hi, I’ve been having a problem with Sony products (namely Acid Pro 5.0 and Vegas Pro 6.0) where as soon as I open them, they use up all available CPU. This doesn’t affect other programs–i.e., I can still do other things such as browse the internet, and neither Acid nor Vegas actually runs slowly–the problem is just that, while using up 100% of the CPU, my laptop begins to overheat rather quickly. I’ve used the same version of each program on a different computer, and there they used only about 5-10% of the CPU. Please help! Thanks.
P.S. I’m using a Toshiba Tecra M4, about 3 years old, and I have 1 GB RAM.

What is your processor speed, amount of ram and your page file size? It could be that your laptop is underpowered for the type of files you are editing and the other computers are not. I assume the 100% cpu usage (and the comparison) comes during attempting to play from the timeline? What fx are you using if any?
Have you closed out of everything else (background processes) that is not necessary to run windows or Vegas/Acid?
How long has it been doing this? Ever since you first installed them? If there was a time when it worked well, then we know it is a conflict with something installed on your pc. If it never has and you know it runs well on other pc’s, then your laptop is at fault. I don’t know what you have installed on it, however you may want to do a clean install of windows and see if that makes a difference (I suspect it will) unless your issue is hardware related.

I have a 2.6 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, page file size is 1.5 GB. I doubt my laptop is underpowered as it can run other video and audio editing programs (Premiere/After Effects CS3, Pro Tools, etc.) without a problem. The 100% CPU usage comes as soon as I start the program, and continues as long as it’s running, regardless of whether I even have a file open.
I am not sure what processes I can safely close, or if any of my running processes would actually affect the performance of Vegas, but I can try…it may be that somehow another process is interfering.
The programs have done this ever since I installed them.
It may be relevant that I used to have a Creative Audigy SB sound card; I don’t remember if that affected Sony programs, but now I’m just using the internal sound card of the laptop. -
FYI:
I run Vegas on a 1.8 GHz dual core laptop with 2 GB RAM. Sure, there are times where I wish I had a quad core with more memory, but never have I had the machine lock up.
If your cpu is a P4 or earlier and not dual core, that could be a problem, and of course, the more memory the better.
That’s the down side of using a laptop, and I live within that boundary 🙂
