Tim… if you’re reading this, what system were you using for the benchmark, and what kind of resolution were you working on?

And did you render Magic Bullet Look Suite with GPU enabled? Because if you have a decent graphics board, Look Suite soars! Just a quick comparison:

    PAL comp, 7 seconds long:
    Look Suite (Crime Scene preset)

On my dual Opteron 244, it renders in 6min10sec
On the same machine with GPU enabled (nVidia 6800GT), it renders in 41 seconds!

That’s without Magic Bullet de-interlacing and de-artifacting. The de-interlacer is still slow.

I tested CineLook 2 last year for the Cow and found it to be very very slow on the rendering side. Boris Continuum Complete offered far better rendering speeds and I can achieve pretty much the identical looks from that product.

    Barend–

I was using just a single Xeon processor system on an SD project. I did not have GPU enabled. I will try to go back and see if my card can handle it. (It’s three years old–I’m not holding my breath.)

Man, that’s a HUGE difference in render times. Thanks for bringing this up.

    Walter–

I don’t have Continuum Complete to compare it to. I just loaded both (CineLook 2 and Magic Bullet Suite 2.1) on the same system and compared. For me, C2 didn’t seem much like a render hog. Bang for the buck, I thought it did a pretty decent job. I’m not necessarily using it for break-neck deadlines, though. I set up about 20 minutes worth of footage to render overnight, and it was done by the time I checked on it.

With regards to your solution in Continuum Complete–does it have a 3:2 introduction solution, or are you using AE’s? Were you already shooting 24p? Did the results work out well for you? I’d be interested to find out how you did it.

    Thanks,

I use AE’s 3:2 and I tested it with regular 29.97 BetaSP material. The results between CineLook 2 and Continuum were very close in terms of appearance, but for render times, Cinelook was just out of the ballpark in terms of what I could ever use in day to day work here. Continuum renders much much faster with their film effects.

Did you need the grain features in C2? I generally turn those way down or off, but I do like their pull-down, time slur, etc. I will look into Continuum. Thanks for the heads-up, man.
