My team and I have been working on a documentary film for about 7 years. Our hope was to finish it in 2020 and submit it to festivals. We wanted to enter it into big festivals like Venice, Cannes, Berlinale, IDFA, Sundance, TIFF, etc. This is our first film, and we ideally want it to have a well-recognized world-premiere.

My understanding is that the usual schedules and programmings and even the nature of how these festivals are conducted have been disrupted and may even change following the Covic 19 global pandemic.

We still would like to be able to put our film through the film festival circuit. Would love to have some guidance/help regarding how to plan for film festivals (taking into account world-premiere requirements) in a post-Covid world.

I would also like to know what your views are about putting a documentary film through a festival circuit first, versus approaching Netflix directly. What are the pros and cons of getting selected/recognized at prestigious film festivals first versus getting a good contract from Netflix directly?
