Just wondering if coverting a 16×9 digital file to 4×3 letterbox with Quicktime or another transcoding program has any perils involved – especially regarding mastering it to tape (Final Cut.) Is this an accepted industry practice nowadays?

These days, when mastering and delivering 16:9 source as 4:3 ( SD ) broadcasters prefer or require FHA (full height anamorphic) rather than letterbox.
