    Picture this:

I’m authoring a how-to video in PRO 9, explaining to a novice user how to use a particular math-based software.

On one page of the software (simulated in my video) I’ll have all these different blank fields, within which different numbers must be placed.

On one page of this (simulated) software, for example, there are twelve different blank fields…. into which I must use VEGAS’s text modules to enter numbers. I have had to use the PAN/CROP function to get these numbers appearing spatially within their proper intended fields.

So far though, it appears as though I need to take out a separate, dedicated track to text EACH OF THESE ONSCREEN TWELVE NUMBER ENTRIES.

Trying to have each number pop up correctly, in its intended location, ON ONE TRACK has seemed like a nightmare, so I abandoned that tack.

Yet, as you know, taking out twelve dedicated tracks– for twelve different TEXT modules— creates a heckuva clutter on my Timeline.

The reason I cannot use CAMTASIA to re-create this software demonstration in a VEGAS movie… is because the software in question is not for a desktop computer… Rather, it is a software used on a handheld PDA. So I’ve had to re-create the “look” of this software by creating facsimiles of it in ILLUSTRATOR.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Workarounds? Advice?

    Thanks, DAVE

I would do all of the graphics in Photoshop. This will make it very easy to line up all the numbers and make them the the correct size. Have each one be a different layer. Then save the whole thing as a PSD file and drop the file onto the Vegas Pro 9.0d timeline using right-click and Add Across Tracks and Vegas will break the PSD out across the tracks. Then you just need to reveal them as needed but no other special processing. Yes, it will be a lot of tracks but you could always use a nested project to make them back into one track to be included into your main video.

John, I’m not finding an ADD ACROSS TRACKS choice in any department…. where is it?

As John said, this is a new feature that was added to Pro 9.0d so if you have any other version, it won’t work.
Load a PSD file into your Project Media tab, right-click it and drag it to the timeline, release it and choose “Add Across Tracks” from the menu.

    Thanks, Mike.

I see that my PSD layers will be added as “streams“. Yes, I do see the right-click menu on an event which designates Streams. (Stream 1, Stream 2, etc.)

Yet, for all my combing of the Helpfiles, I am not clear on what they mean by the word “Stream”.

    What is a “stream“….exactly…..within VEGAS PRO 9.0d?

    Thanks, D.

I looked through the manual and did find a reference to “streams” as it applies to PSD files.
It seems to me that what Sony calls a stream is, in reality, a layer in Photoshop.
They (Sony) have a habit of giving things names in Vegas that are contrary to established names.
For example, in Vegas it’s called an “event”.
Most other NLEs call it a “clip”.
    Hope that helps.

A “stream” in Vegas Pro 9.0d is the same as a “stream” in the rest of the video industry… streams are the contents of multimedia files (i.e., video and audio). Each file type whether an AVI, MPG, MOV, VOB, WMV, MP4, etc. can contain multiple video streams and multiple audio streams. When Vegas refers to a stream it means either the video or audio stored in a file.

For image files this is a bit of a misnomer because image files don’t contain streams so it might be confusing when used for images or PSD files. But if Vegas didn’t treat an image as a stream, they would come in as one single frame because an image has no length. So it has to treat them as if they were multimedia streams to make video out of them.

What Vegas Pro 9.0d does is treat Photoshop layers as if they were streams in a video file and can separate them into multiple tracks or takes. This is an extremely powerful new feature in 9.0d.

    Thanks, John and Mike.

Now i’m curious to see if PHOTOSHOP can somehow animate its various Filter actions (proprietary and third-party)… ?

The animations will have to be done in Vegas. There is no way to animate in Photoshop. This would be easier to do in After Effects but should be achievable in Vegas with the Track Motion tool.
