  • Correct assumptions for including 4×3 in 16×9 DVD project?

Posted by Paul Gregory on April 12, 2005 at 5:23 am

I wish to create my first project from a camcorder which shot in 16 x 9 ratio.

I’m working on a section which is a collection of stills which I intend to render out first as an AVI for later inclusion onto a DVD along with the main video component of the project. Even though these stills are really pictures taken in 4 x 3 ratio, I’m guessing that I will have to render this AVI as 16.9. My assumptions are 1./ that when viewed on the DVD I will just have black at the top & bottom on the TV & 2./ this rendering will squeeze these stills in when the AVI is created & that the DVD Player will eventually stretch them out again when the MPEG2 file plays on my TV.

Are these assumptions correct or is there anything else that I should be doing?

You are not correct. Your stills will not dictate what aspect ratio will be shown or if its letterboxed.
Keep the veg project in 16:9; keep the DVDA project in 16:9. Use a 16;9 monitor to see what your doing.
