I think this is about the only time you should use the fit command. Corner pin works best whe the footage is the same size as the comp. drop your plate image in a new same size as your project comp. use ctrl+aalt+f or cmnd+option+f to fit the plate to the comp. Drag this comp into the main comp and use it as the source for the corner pin. Everything should work just fine.
