Hello, this is my very first post so can people please be nice and help me! I really need to create the effect they’ve achieved on this website https://www.caninecards.co.uk/ The video with the dogs in is what you should be looking at! I need to film dogs running with the same effect and the add the background in afterwards which should be easy. I heard it’s something to do with vector rotoscoping but I’m not sure. I’ve got Ilustrator, Photoshop & AE at my disposal. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks and many regards.

If you just want the snow, AE should have a snow effect for you. It will render over the entire footage.

Now … if you want it behind some dogs yet in front of the background, you need to separate those dogs from their background. The best method is to shoot the dogs on a well-lit (saturated, not gray & gloomy nor blown-out) green or blue screen, then key the dogs out using one of AE’s keying effects.

If that’s not possible, be prepared to spend a lot of time cutting out the dogs by hand using masks drawn with the pen tool. This is called rotoscoping, and is very tedious. And if the dogs have long hair, I’d venture to say that you cannot get a good result rotoscoping no matter what you do. You might be able to blur the masks, but you’d also start to see some of the background through the blur. If you then want to composite the dogs over the same background, with snow in between, that might work for you.

For more on rotoscoping, search the COW.

Firstly thanks Steve and Dave for responding so quickly. In answer to your questions Dave. I have been asked to create video rather like the one on the website. I’m not to bothered about the background or snow at the moment just the dogs. I do want the dogs to look just like they do on the website; devoid of tone. It kinda reminds me of “Go With The Flow” the Queens of the Stone Age music video if you have seen that. The frame rate will be reduced to 15 frames. I’m guessing the video will loop but I’m not handling that are and have limited info on the subject. I know that the finished video will be put into Flash and used like it is on the Canine Card website. Thanks for your time.

Ah. Then you should click on Aharon’s head and look for his “creating a cartoon from video” tutorial.

You can also use Flash to achieve a similar effect.

If the final result will be Flash, then you should do it in flash in the first place me thinks. That way it will be way cleaner and easier to load on the site. Flash itself has a vectorizer built in that will get you started. Then you’ll break all the vector objects into parts which can be converted to symbols then animated independently.
