For work we need to take our videos we’ve made for youtube and convert them to a standard set of specs listed below. We were told you can only do this thru Final Cut (iMovie wont cut it) so I went and looked at the program and still got a little confused on how to change a few things. Mainly to MPEG 2 and the parts that follow that. Can someone explain to me what these all mean and if they are stated differently in the actaul program?

    NTSC:
    MPEG2 4:2:2P@ML is 4:2:2
    Frames: 29.97 per sec
    Frame size: 720 x 480
    Bitrate: 50 Mbps
    GOP Pattern: I Frame only
    Auto GOP: None
    Audio Type: Uncompressed PCM
    Sample rate: 48000Hz
    Audio Bitrate: 1.6Mb/s

I think you’re better off using Compressor. It’s a good interface for specific conversions like this.

In Compressor you can make a setting to fit your exact compression specs and use it whenever you want without having to recreate it.

I don’t own this Compressor program so if its possible is there a way to do this thru Final cut like we were told by our corporate office it was?

What version of FCP are you using Samantha?

Compressor is part of FCS and any version of FCP 5.1 and above is part of the entire suite of apps, which means that Compressor is there too.

It depends on which version of Final Cut Pro you are working with. We used to be able to export an mpeg 2 right from FCP, but I don’t think the program has had that function for a few years.

The current manual doesn’t list mpeg 2 as an export option for quicktime conversion.

Compressor comes with Final Cut Studio. If you have the discs I suggest you install compressor.
It’s really simple once you get the hang of it.

Here’s a post from 2006 from someone with a similar issue:

Someone triple check me on this. David Roth Weiss are you out there???

Okay I did some digging on this computer and it looks like we do have compressor! Yippee but I’m still having problems making it go along with the settings works asks our videos to be in. For instance the MPEG2 4:2:2P@ML is 4:2:2 i don’t know what to change to make that happen.

The Bitrate according to this only offers 2.0-9.0mbps and its an average and max when i need a bitrate setting at 50mbps and the GOP Pattern for me nees to be what looks like an “|Frame only”

I haven’t even gotten to the trying to see if this works yet part cause I can’t get the settings tailored.

Ari like i said in my other post I found the Compressor program, thanks for telling me about that. The link you supplied doesn’t really answer my follow up questions either which were

“Okay I did some digging on this computer and it looks like we do have compressor! Yippee but I’m still having problems making it go along with the settings works asks our videos to be in. For instance the MPEG2 4:2:2P@ML is 4:2:2 i don’t know what to change to make that happen.

I have about 20 videos to switch over by the end of the day on Friday and I’m flipping out. Any suggestions on how to get it to the settings I need?

Thanks guys your amazing by the way.

I think you’re going to have to make a custom mpeg 2 setting.

In the upper righthand corner of the Settings window is a button with a Plus Sign (+) and a downward facing arrow.

That is the button to create a custom setting.

Click it, select mpeg 2, go just to the right in the Inspector window and have at it!

The Compressor Manual is your friend.

I did that and thats how i discovered it wouldn’t let me get the settings I needed. I think my problem is I don’t quite understand what all those settings mean so when I see them in the program written differently I don’t understand.

Do you or anyone on here have the program and can take a peak to see if its not me, or if it is me just being stupid?

    Hi Samatha

The specs you note are those of a standard NTSC IMX50 file (aka D10) … you can export directly from FCP as Quicktime Movie w/ Setting: IMX NTSC (50 Mb/s)

    Best
