  • Converting Old Black & White footage to HD 16:9

I am making a documentary using old 1960s footage and want to convert it to widescreen.

So far, I am using the following sequence settings:

    Editing mode: QuickTime DV PAL
    Timebase: 25.00fps

    Video Settings:
    Frame size: 720h 576v (1.4587)
    Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.4587)
    Fields: Lower Field First
    Audio Settings:
    Sample rate: 48000 samples/second

...And I am simply scaling up the footage using the motion feature.

The results are ok but is there a better way of doing this? Can I make the footage HD using Premiere 5.5 or is there another program that you could suggest that would be good?

The original source footage is mainly British 720 x 576 25.00 fps

Sorry a bit new to this – any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You’re limited as to the visual quality you can get out of this footage. When I see 4:3 footage mixed with HD stuff in documentary, it seems that generally they window the footage, centered in the middle of the screen, with black around it. It preserves the quality (or lack thereof) of the footage, and also tells the viewer that this is the real thing.

There are some conversion utilities available from third parties, such as Red Giant, but I’m not sure what the return is on them, as far as quality. Here’s RG’s Instant HD:

Maybe give the trial a shot and see what you get.

Thanks Joe that is helpful- I will take a look at the software you have suggested. But that is something I hadn’t thought … I will have to convert all the footage to HD and not just
