Converting JPG’s
Posted by Norman Willis on July 17, 2009 at 9:50 pmHow can I convert my .jpg images to .png, or something I can use in Vegas? And is there a mass converter, so I can do this fairly rapidly?
Thank you.

July 17, 2009 at 10:03 pmWhile you can use JPGs in Vegas, it seems to like PNGs better.
I’ve been a big fan of IrfanView (it’s free) for a long time now.
Batch conversion and batch rename tools are a small part of it’s extensive list of tools.edit: two (very quick) votes for IfanView so that should tell you something 🙂

July 17, 2009 at 10:03 pmSimply use an image editing software to handle that
side of things: Corel Photo-Paint and Adobe Photoshop
as you know are the two best…Or on the free side, the
best option is irfanview.

July 19, 2009 at 6:25 amSteve, Mike, thanks.
I got IrfanView installed and running with no problem, and converted a whole bunch of stuff in five minutes or less. Or so I thought.
Before the alleged conversion, the .jpg’s would not go onto the timeline. Every time I tried it, I got a red O with a slash through it. However, after the alleged batch .jpg to .png conversion, the files now show up in Explorer as IrfanView files. I was able to drag them onto the timeline, and so I just assumed that they were now .png’s. However, looking at them again, they are still .jpg’s, just renamed as IrfanView .jpgs. But for some reason they consent to get dragged onto the timeline now????
Now that the Sabbath is over, I thought I would go ahead and convert the rest of my .jpg’s to .png’s, so that it would all be done. I did the same as I did on Friday (at least I think), opening up IrfanView, and going to File >> Batch Conversion Rename. I selected all of my .jpg’s in D:MyPictures, and clicked on “Output Directory for Result Files”, which also gives me D:MyPictures. Then I clicked on “Start Batch.”
Now all the .jpg’s in D:MyPictures are IrfanView .jpg’s. They all drag onto the timeline, but they did not convert to .png’s (either).
I suppose as long as they drag onto the timeline I don’t have any real problem (so long as they render, which I don’t know yet); but what am I missing? How do I use IrfanView to convert the .jpg’s to .png’s?
Thanks

July 19, 2009 at 6:39 amI thought I should do a test render (halfway through the project) just to make sure these IrfanView .jpg’s are going to render (and not make my project crash).
What means, “Save project as path reference in rendered media”?

July 19, 2009 at 6:51 amHi Ralph.
I also have CS2, although I only have it installed on my Vista 32 machine (laptop), because I am not sure what would happen if I installed it on my workstation (Vista 64). I suppose I could set a disk image restore point, and try loading it on Vista 64. Do you suppose the drivers would all work? Or am I just asking for trouble?
I have not had time to learn Photoshop CS2 yet. I see a tab on the right labeled ‘actions’. Is that what you mean?
And then what do I do?

I rebooted the system, re-rendered, and still get the same error message.
Is this likely due to the (IrfanView) .jpg’s? Or is there something wrong with my Project Properties, or Render As selections?
Or is there some other issue?

July 19, 2009 at 8:30 amOK, I got it to render using the Main Concept AVC/AAC (.mp4) using the Apple iPod 640×480 video template.
Why does the Sony AVC not work, and the Main Concept AVC works (with an iPod template?)? Am I losing anything by using the Main Concept AVC template? I noticed that I had letterboxing top and bottom.
Memory usage stayed down around 3.3 GB the whole time, so I’m not sure if I need the swap file up at 12GB?
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

July 19, 2009 at 8:37 amThe Main Concept Default Template also gives a ‘low on memory’ error. So it looks like only the iPod 640×480 template works?????
Is this the way it should be?
And how do I get away from the letterboxing?
Thanks.

I have not had time to learn Photoshop CS2 yet. I see a tab on the right labeled ‘actions’. Is that what you mean?

So why don’t you just use Photoshop CS2 Actions for the conversion?
In photoshop CS2:
Open a .jpg image
Open the ACTION palette (WINDOWS-ACTIONS)
Click on the CREATE NEW ACTION button at the bottom of the pallette
Give the ACTION a name and click RECORD
Perform all the tasks you would like to do with the image (in this case only saving as .PNG in a new folder
Click the STOP RECORDING button at the bottom of the ACTION pallette. You have just made your first ACTION
To play your ACTION on a folder with images:
FILE-AUTOMATE-BATCH
a popup windows opens
Select the ACTION you would like to perfom (you gave it a name!)
Select the folder with the images you would like to change
Select the folder you want to save the new .PNG images
Click OKTime to get your well earned cup of coffee….
