July 19, 2009 at 12:49 pmHow big are the images? If you are are not zooming in on them I would make them the same size as your project (1920×1080). Even if you are zooming in, you don’t need them to be more that 1.5 to 2x the project resolution. If the images are too large, they will take up too much memory when processing and you might see low memory errors.

July 19, 2009 at 1:29 pm[Norman Willis] “How do I use IrfanView to convert the .jpg’s to .png’s?”
File > Batch Conversion/Rename.
Make sure the Batch conversion option is selected under Work as: at the top left of the screen.
Under Batch conversion settings: Output format: select PNG – Portable Network Graphics.
Select your input and output directories and start the conversion.

July 19, 2009 at 4:38 pmHi Norman,
If you have CS2, you should be a member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals). If your not, it’s well worth the money and discounts you get. Plus, you have access to all the tutorials on how to do tips and tricks. CS2 is a very powerful program with lots to learn, just like Sony Vegas7, 8, 9 or whatever version you have.
Best of luck to you and now I’m off to the Baltics to capture some pictures and video.Ralph Hajik

July 19, 2009 at 6:39 pmThanks, Theo.
OK, I printed your directions out, and it is on my list of things to try this week, once I get the crises handled (Cineform, the new website, etceteras).
I got them converting in IrfanView, but I will try to add this to my toolbox also. Thanks!

July 19, 2009 at 6:40 pmIs there some way to ‘bookmark’ posts that give me answers that I want to try later (like this one)? Or do I need to cut, paste and print out (as I have been doing)?

They are all pretty much
Still: 3072 x 2304 x 24, JPEGDuring the render I was watching under Windows Task Manager, under the Resources tab, and RAM usage never exceeded 3.5GB. Average RAM usage was about 3.3 GB.
Vista 64 Ultimate
Q9650 CoreDuo Quad at 3.0GHz
8GB RAM (Crucial Ballistix CAS-4)
4GB ReadyBoost RAM
12GB swap fileIt renders under MainConcept AVC/AAC with iPod 640×480 template just fine, but it gives me letterboxing (which I don’t want). I cannot seem to get it to render under the Sony AVC, Internet 16:9 HD 30p setting, which is what I really want.
Should I start a different thread? Or should I keep on running here?

Well… you are feeding 7 megapixel images into a 2 megapixel project. That’s way more than you need. Almost 4x more! That means you are asking Vegas to resize a 7MP image to 2MP 30 time a second. That’s a lot of memory manipulation.
I would use Photoshop to batch convert the images down to 2MP and see if that makes a difference. You have nothing to loose. I’m guessing that Photoshop is better at resizing still images 4x smaller than Vegas is so you might actually get higher quality output.

I appreciate that. It is rendering right now, but if it won’t render once I add the sound track I will try to downsize the images. However, I am zooming in pretty tight on some of these shots (like focusing in tight on just one or two words out of a 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ page), so as long as it is still rendering, I would prefer to leave it. (“If it ain’t broke….”) Hopefully I can render well in advance of the deadline this week.
Also, is it normal that the .png output files in IrfanView come out 3-4 times larger than the original .jpg (e.g., the .jpg was 549KB and the .png is 1,611KB)? Some only came out 2x as large, but most of them came out 3-4 times as large.
And finally, should I be using CAVLC or CABAC coding?
