  • Converting HD on FCP to a web viewable format

Hi there. I’ve got a five minute film shot in AVCHD which I converted to Apple Intermediate Codec and then edited in Final Cut Pro. But I can’t seem to export it to a useful size to view on the web. I’d like it to be 640 x 360 in .H264. But I can’t manage the settings to get it smaller than 150 mbs. And that’s too big for easy watching.

Can anybody give me advice on this? I’m sure there are lots of easy ways to do it, but I’m striking out. I tried using the broadband auto setting on FCP, but the quality stinks.

For any suggestions, please be as specific as possible, and don’t assume I know anything…

    Thanks!

    Sam

Compressor has presets for what you are trying to do.

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Try H.264 Medium. Works great for me.

It still comes out at 150 mbs when run on Medium quality, 640 x 360 in .H264.

Also, that’s using QUicktime Conversion, and frame rate set on Current and the options all on Automatic.

Shoudl I change any of that?

I don’t use QT conversion, just QT. Also, that’s a large frame size for web imho.

You can set any of them any way you want, play around with it till you get it the way you want. Do the math, if you have a setting of, say, 500kbs (or 62.5KBs), every minute of video will use 62.5KBx60seconds, or 3750KB, or 3.75MB.

Thanks. I don’t really want to pay for a converter though.

This is very frustrating. Now I’m hearing from PC users that they can’t even view the h264 clips I’ve got up there.

    Help!

I am having real trouble converting to WMV or AVI. FCP freezes when it tries to convert to WMV, and when it converts to AVI you can’t control the size and its huge.

    Help.
