Converting H.264 .MOV without ANY quality loss
So i recently purchased a Kodak Zi8, and am extremely impressed with the quality of video it puts out. And all the video runs well in every program i run it on, until i go to edit it on Sony Vegas Pro 9. I’ve been all over the internet for HOURS looking for different ways to fix it. If i pull the .mov into vegas its extremely choppy. And i’ve used basically EVERY conversion setting on SUPER, and the best i found, was pretty good quality, yet the colors are washed out and it really frustrates me. I purchased an HD camcorder to edit and make HD movies. I have a good computer, Intel core 2 quad, 2gigs of ram, plenty of hd space, Nvidia 8800GTS. I’m about to try and pull the videos in quicktime and export as mp4, and see if theres any quality loss. But guys im not going for a botched solution that wont give me the quality i purchased. Please help!! PLEASE!!

The trouble with these $150 fixed focus HD cameras is that they shoot a non-standard h.264 format that no software can edit easily. They are really meant for sharing YouTube videos (as Kodak’s marketing says) and should not be expected to be supported by professional NLE’s. If you don’t want a “botched” solution then you should buy an HD camera that shoots a standard HD format like AVCHD or HDV. Otherwise you will always have problems editing your footage. Your best bet is to stick with whatever software shipped with the camera. That is the software it was meant to be used with. (not what you want to year, but unfortunately the “reality” of these cheap ‘shoot-n-view’ cameras)

H264 is NOT an editing codec. A lot of us have been through the heartache you are suffering. Seriously if you want some peace of mind read what we have done to sort out these sorts of problems. It’s been plain sailing ever since. Check out:
