Converting frame size
Hello,
First, thank you for making this forum available. It has been a wonderful source of information and I look forward to being a part of it.I’m a new FCP user, coming from a PC based editing system, I’m working in FCP 7, with a Mac Pro and imputing HD footage from a Sony Z5U. I shot in HD1080i, foolishly downloaded quite a bit of footage before I understood the settings properly, and have ended up with a frame size of 720 x 480. When I realized my mistake, I altered the settings and downloaded a test file that now has a frame size of 1440 x 1080, which of course has a considerably higher quality appearance.
Strangely though, both files are the same size, which makes me wonder if the 720 x 480 still has the info it needs to be converted to it’s original form.
Is it possible to convert the frame size without quality loss, or am I stuck with having to redownload all the footage ?Thanks for any help.

Oddly enough, DV (the format you captured first) and HDV have the EXACT SAME data rate. How else could they both fit onto the same tape format? HDV is highly compressed, and in such a unique way that makes editing it natively difficult. There are no real frames…well, there are, but only three per second. The rest is a Group of Pictures that are used to guess at what the image will be.
But, rest assured, you are now capturing at full resolution.

Thanks so much for responding so quickly, and for explaining the size issue. Am I understanding that I can’t convert the footage that has already been downloaded and that I’ll need to redownload everything in the proper format ?

Sorry, you will have to recapture the footage. You can’t convert it after the fact and have it be full quality.
