  • Converting footage from 29.97 to 24p. Is it possible without losing quality?

I shoot outdoor video with a Sony VX2100 which has no 24p frame rate support. I prefer the 24p look over the standard 29.97. So is there anyway to shoot in 29.97 and convert later on my PC to 24p without losing quality and still get that authentic 24p look?

Also I want to buy a 24p camera, but if even I do, probably 50% of my footage would still be shot in 29.97. So is there anyway good way to use both 24p and 29.97 footage seemlessly in one movie? I suppose it comes down to whether you can successfully convert 29.97 to 24p???

    Thanks!

There is no way to do it without losing quality. You have to deinterlace it to convert to 24p which results in throwing away half the vertical resolution on moving objects. My favorite method is using DVFilm maker. It does give really good results.

Magic bullet, I think, does an excellent job at conversion to 24p. But—as was mentioned, if you want great 24p its best to simply shoot in 24p. I also shoot with a Sony dvx2000 and Magic Bullet can do some amazing things with footage from that camera. It takes a long time to render. If I have a large quantity of footage that needs to be 24p, I simply borrow or rent a camera that can shoot in 24p. Next year I will need a couple of new cameras and will definitely go with one that shoots 24p. The big question for me at this point is whether or not to go HD.
