  • Converting FCP HDV PAL Sequence to SD NTSC DVD Mpeg

Posted by Peter Archibald on July 1, 2006 at 9:08 pm

Hi from New Zealand. We are currently shooting and editing PAL HDV footage, of which will ultimatly be authored as a SD (4:3) NTSC DVD using DVD Studio. How can I export and get the best quality and interpolation from PAL HDV sequence converted to SD NTSC Mpeg2 ??

You can do this by exporting a reference movie to Compressor (follow directions on Page 195 in Compressor Help).

A much better way would be to purchase the Standards Conversion plugin from Graeme Nattress, which works directly in FCP..it results in a much cleaner and faster conversion.

If you need the highest quality and money is of no object, output your PAL sequence to tape and have a proper hardware standards conversion done on a Snell and Wilcox at your local dub facility

Thanks for the advice..I will look at purchasing the sotftware…Just another thing…do you know if future HD DVD players will be both PAL and NTSC compatable in both directions. I.E. PAL HD DVD’s will play on NTSC players and vis versa??
