I need to convert a 97 minute movie from 23.98HD ProRes to PAL SD.

I tried using Graeme Nattress’ conversion software and it looks just fine, except that I find that there is a slight stutter where his software creates an extra frame – the 25th frame. He advised me to use Cinema Tools to create a file which runs 4% faster via the “conform” option.

However, I have no idea how to do this and can’t find anything helpful in the manual.

I don’t want to bug Graeme right now because he’s up to his neck in all this RED camera stuff.

Can anyone give me guidance, some sort of workflow or a page in the manual – in short, anything to assist me?

    Thanks

    Harry.

I know that if you do what you did about a thousand references to the word “conform” come up. However, can you please tell me which of those pages of references will help me?

I don’t know what I am supposed to conform to what, you see.

I don’t, for instance, see any reference to speeding up the film by 4%. And if I search under PAL, I cannot find the word “conform” in the same searched area.

Your post makes me sound like a lazy idiot, but that’s untrue. I really did give it a good shot – you see?

Can you give me any positive help, or is it just that it makes you feel hot to criticize me for being ignorant and perhaps, in your perception, lazy?

Sorry, but I think you’re being unfair.

“Conforming One Clip at a Time” is the section with the instructions. The manual does not say PAL because PAL means is a standard that means multiple things. So instead the manual just says “25 fps.”

“Conforming” is the same thing as “speed change” – that’s what it means. While you can conform it to the proper 25fps, it will not convert it to a real PAL format for you. The resolution and color space will not be altered.

    Sean,

Thanks so much for your post.

    That’s enormously helpful.

One question: should I conform before or after I have converted the file to PAL using Nattress Convertor?

[Harry Bromley-Davenport] “One question: should I conform before or after I have converted the file to PAL using Nattress Convertor?”

You don’t use Nattress at all. Just conform the clips to 25, put them in a PAL sequence, and Final Cut 6 will automatically scale it for you.

Oh. OK. Thanks a million. I had, however, understood that Nattress did a better job than FCP, but I’ll take your advice anyway.

Best wishes and thanks again from an idiot,

    Harry
