    Hi all,

I am using Vegas Pro 12 and my current project settings for a music film documentary that I am doing are set at 23.976 fps (1080 HD)and was thinking of changing the project settings to 29.97 fps although I am already half way done with post producing the film in Vegas.

A majority of the footage I am using was shot in 24 fps at 1080 HD, which is why I originally chose to have the project settings at 23.976 although I do have a few other clips of footage that were shot at a different frame rate.

Anyways, since Vegas Pro 12 will automatically conform/convert the footage to whatever the project settings are once you add the footage/clips (event) to the timeline… I was wondering what would happen if I changed the project settings from 23.976 fps to 29.97 fps midway through my project?

Would there be any upsides or downsides to doing this?

Would it make the footage any more fluid in terms of motion?

Would it mess anything up or would all the clips on the timeline simply re-confrom/convert to the new project settings?

Obviously I am terribly new at all this and could use the help and assistance. Thanks in advance for any support offered.

[Daniel Rucerito] “Would there be any upsides or downsides to doing this? “

The upside is that any generated media will be created at 29.97 if that’s your final delivery frame rate. The down side is that editing might slow down as Vegas tries to conform on-the-fly as this will take more processing power.

If the majority of your footage is 23.976 fps it is strongly recommended that you keep your project at 23.976 fps. You can render to 29.97 fps later if you want but you definitely want to work in the same frame rate as your footage for the best editing experience.

[Daniel Rucerito] “Would it make the footage any more fluid in terms of motion? “

Not necessarily. It will create synthetic frames to fill the frame rate which may cause ghosting and blurring. It is always more desirable to shoot at the frame rate you plan to deliver (or conversely deliver in the frame rate you shot).

[Daniel Rucerito] “Would it mess anything up or would all the clips on the timeline simply re-confrom/convert to the new project settings?”

It will mess up your timing. The clips will conform but your edits won’t. This is because “time is relative” (ask Einstein 😉 ) For example, if you made a 1 second fade it will no longer be 1 second! At 23.976 fps 1 second is 12 frames. At 29.97 fps 1 second is 15 frames. When you change your project from 23.976 fps to 29.97 fps all of your 1 second fades will still be 12 frames and no longer be 1 second in duration which is why I say it will mess up the timing of your edits.

    Thanks a million John Rofrano!

Btw… I’ve previously read many of your posts before in this forum back when I first bought Sony Vegas Pro 11 and had software nightmares with it and New BlueFX Titler Pro. Vegas Pro 12 though seems to have knocked out a lot of the kinks I had with Pro 11.

Again your knowledge and expertise are greatly appreciated. Take care!
