  • Convert TC values of EDL after 24p -> 5994 conversion

An interesting and pretty challenging one here.

We edited a show in 24p in Avid Media Composer 3.0. All media originated in 24p, so this was the most reasonable way to go. However, the network called for a 59.94 HDCAM deliverable. This framerate conversion was done at the post house after color.

One of our deliverables, as per usual, is an annotated shot-by-shot EDL. After getting partway through creating this document, it occurred to us that the master sequence TCs generated by Avid for this EDL correspond to the 24p sequence in which it was edited, NOT the TC of the 59.94 HDCAM master. Naturally, there will be a wild difference between the TC values for the 24p sequence and the 59.94 master, starting after the 24th frame. So what we’re left with is two huge columns full of data (sequence TC in, sequence TC out) in a spreadsheet which are inaccurate.

I’m racking my brain to come up with workarounds. As it is, I have a conversion factor between the two framerates (each second of 59.94 contains 1.24875 times as many frames as a second of 24p) but no way to automate the conversion from one framerate to another. If it were as simple as multiplying the TC values, that would be easy, but unfortunately Excel doesn’t have a built in TC calculator (and 1:03:59:04 x 1.24875 obviously won’t give you anything that makes sense).

The most logical way to do this would be to essentially convert the frame rate of the sequence itself (simply tell the sequence there are now 29.97 frames in a second instead of 24) and re-export the EDL, but of course Avid won’t let you do that. I know Final Cut has more flexibility in moving between one framerate or another, but I’m not aware of a way to get the sequence from Avid into Final Cut without spending $500 on Automatic Duck Pro.

Does anybody have any thoughts on how to cross this bridge? I’m sure people must have dealt with this or a similar issue before.

    Thanks!

What happens if you take your 24p EDL, open it in EDL Manager, and have EDL Manager generate a sequence from it in a 30i Matchback project?

    Just a thought.

If you edited in a NTSC 24 offline, you can make both a 24 and 3o fps EDL. You can even create a field based EDL to show where the cadence falls for the 2:3 pulldown.
