    Hi Everyone,

We have been working on a documentary for the past 2 years on Final Cut Pro and now
we are switching to Avid (the new editor only works on Avid). I am very familiar with the Final
Cut workflow but have no idea about the Avid workflow. I have called the Avid people, but they
have not responded to my questions. This is all quite frustrating and i’m hoping you guys can help me.

    My questions is:

I have managed to import the Final Cut pro logs into the Avid, so now I have a bunch of bins with
offline media in the Avid. Now I know there is a way to transcode and relink the footage through
AMA but I really have NO idea how to do it. Can someone help me understand the step by step
of what needs to be done?

    Thanks!
    Maya

    Maya,

    Give this video a look.

I think you’ll understand it better after watching.

    Hi Joe,

Thanks for sending me this link.

Here is what we need to do:

Create an Avid mirror version of the FCP file we have (with over 250 hours of footage and edited
sequences). Considering we shot on Panasonic HVX with P2 cards, I’m wondering what would be the best way to:

    1) re-log the footage (maintain the names of the clips we have in the FCP) and re-link the files (I know Avid MC5 can work with QT files but it’s not recommended, so what would be the best way to do it?). We are at this stage right now, so it would be great if anyone can help us figure this out.

    2) Once I have all the clips logged, how do I import sequences?

    Maya,

You have so much footage and work already done! Therefore, I would not trust anything less than Automatic Duck. It is accurate, quick and a great value…your editor will be able to pick up and continue the edit!

Yeah, we are going to use automative duck once we have organized all the footage in the Avid File.

We are trying to figure out how to log and transfer all the footage before we can even think about
importing sequence. Do you know how to do it?

    Maya-

As Matt stated above, we do have an inexpensive tool called “AAF Transfer” that will import Final Cut Projects into Media Composer. In addition, we have a free trial of the software that you can find here:

    https://www.borisfx.com/AAF/

It’s good for 14 days, so have a look and let me know what you think!

Wow thanks for posting that video of Automatic Duck in action. I’ve got two clients for whom I do overflow editing. They are both Final Cut. Now I have to make a giant QT Animation file or visa versa.

    This will help immensely!

    Thanks!

    Hi there,
the tutorial and videos look pretty simple with the new MC5.

I am in the same situation – – – the project is deadline driven. BUT instead of having new software, I am working off FCP 6.06 and MC 4.02
BUT i have automatic duck 4.04.

After trying to export the AAF using automatic duck in different ways, I am unable to relink the files back in avid.
The MXF that automatic duck creates, avid tells me that it needs to be quarantined.
Has anyone encountered this before? OR what’s the best solution going from FCP 6.06 to AVID MC 4.02?
    Thanks =(

    Rany-

Have you tried our product in this case?

Hey Tyler, I did download the Boris AAF thing yesterday and got my temp license key, so I am using it.
It is awesome! It actually works!

The only finicky thing i see is that since the files are from the Canon 5D that does not create randomly generated filenames, when importing them into FCP – FCP bumps up the increment because the capture scratch is in the same location when the batch import was done.
So I have to go in and click clip by clip – referring to a record i have of the new FCP names.
It’s mind numbing – BUT way better than redoing the work over again!
    Thanks so much for this!
