Convert 720p 23.98 to 1080i 59.94 with Kona 2
I have project I am working on with the Knoa 2 Card. We need to master at 1080i 59.94 to HDCAM. Can the Kona 2 Card handle 1080i at 59.94. It is not listed as being compatible HD Formate on the AJA web site?
We are working in Final Cut. The project has a alot of compositing so we shot it at 720p 23.98 with the HDX200. We are compositing everything now in a 10 bit timeline with at 23.98. How would you recommend converting it to 1080i 59.98? The video is very short only a 90 seconds. So we can easally render it on a 1080i timeline, but is this the best way to convert it. And back to the first question can the Kona 2 Card send it 1080i 59.94 to a HDCAM record deck?

The KONA card does not cross convert between HD formats. It doess up and down converts between HD and SD formats.
If you want to go out 1080 then you have options,
1. Software cross convert by droping the 720P sequence into a 1080 seauence and blow it upto fit the frame and render it.
2. Go through a terranax process of cross conversion. (this is a proprietary system that requires you bring it to a house that has a Terranax.
The good news is that Quicktime does a very nice job with cross conversion and you can do it right in your own room.

I had a feeling that I would trancode 720p to 1080i on a quicktime timeline. I and happy to hear that quicktime does a good job of this, but I still have another qurestion.
How about sending out 1080i 59.94? Can the Kona card send out this formate for mastering? It is not one of the fram rate that the card is advertised to work with in 1080i. Se Below the teck specs from the AJA web site. Has anyone had luck send 1080i 59.94 out to a HDCAM deck with teh Kona 2 Card?

1080i 59.94 is essentially 1080i 29.97. 59.94 is fields per second, 29.97 is frames per second, just like NTSC. FCP/Kona can handle 1080i just fine. You just need the hard drive/RAID bandwidth to do so.

I had a feeling that 59.94 was identical to 29.97, but I could not find any conclusive evidence on the internet. I have all the other hardware I need. I have set up a 8 drive sata raid with the sonnet x-8 card. It has been working very well for me so far. I get about 450 mb/s read and write with a half full raid.
Is there a good intnete dtabase or information web site that I should use as a reference for these little distictions like 1080i 59.94 is the same at 1080i 29.97…..
On another note where can I find the 4.4.4 RGB codec. It does not seem to have been installed on FCP when I installed the latest version of the aja software package?
