Controlling lights with midi
Posted by Enrique Yvker on November 28, 2013 at 7:31 pmHello people,
I am trying to sinchronyze lights with midi. I do not know anything about midi.I want to produce an MTC and then have a group of cues and trigger them every time.
My main problema is I have not found how to make an MTC an record it.
Thanks a lot
Enrique

Vegas is capable of having mixer boards respond to action made within Vegas. I believe this is done through the MIDI connection. Sooooo….. it’s not a big leap to think that maybe these Audio instructions could be used to fire a MIDI device that in turn could make lights respond.
Something like that – yeah?
JR may have a better take on this.

Well, I’ll try… 😉

Perhaps you should find someone who has done this before. I understand MIDI but have no idea how you would sync lights to it.

I don’t beleive you can do this with Vegas. You can get Vegas to generate MIDI timecode by going to Options | Timecode | Generate MIDI Timecode (F7). This will send MTC out the MIDI port that is configured for Output under Options | Preferences | MIDI. The problem is, Vegas doesn’t have an MIDI tracks so you have no way to send the cues. Vegas’ MIDI timecode is only good for syncing two MIDI devices together.

You probably need ACID Pro instead of Vegas Pro. ACID supports MIDI tracks and will allow you to send MIDI cues.

November 30, 2013 at 4:54 amI guess it depends on what you’re trying to do with the lights, and the lights themselves.
There’s a subtopic in MIDI, called MIDI Show Control, that has established MIDI messages for controlling things other than music.
Most lights themselves run a protocol called DMX512, which is faster than MIDI and run over differential pair (RS-485). But some light controller boards will accept a MIDI connection for MIDI Show Control interfacing. You’d have to know the particulars of your board to do this effectively.
Vegas isn’t the right tool for MIDI. If you’re sequencing music, you can including some show control commands in the same sequence but a different MIDI port, and run one MIDI cable to your instrument, one to the lighting board. Acid, Sonar, most DAWs can handle this kind of thing, but they don’t necessarily have a direct understanding of MSC.
There are a bunch of programs designed specifically for MSC. Some are listed under the MIDI Show Control page on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI_Show_Control.
If I needed to do something fast and dirty, taking into account time and maybe events from a MIDI trigger of some kind, I might write it as a ChucK program… ChucK is a computer language specifically designed to deal with time and music. It can deal with events timed in milliseconds, minutes, hours, or days. Not an instant solution, and not a good place to start unless you’re already a programmer.
