  • Control Adjustment layer?

Posted by Jonathan Kempe on May 21, 2008 at 7:41 am

I dont like Adjustment layers because they adjust everything below….! there is no alternatives – like, tell adjustment layer to control just the layer below, (that would be sweet)

    Is it possible to script.

-Make Adjustment layer effect all Labeled layers, labeled LAVENDER for example? (and not others, and that it doesnt matter were you put it below or over)
That would be really neet to control the colors of specific layers in a comp.

-Make Adjustment layer be 100% opacity just for selected layers and 0 % for others?

[Jonathan Kempe] “like, tell adjustment layer to control just the layer below, (that would be sweet)”

That would have the same affect as pre-comping the layer and applying the effect to the pre-comp itself. Or perhaps even applying the effect directly to the layer (depending on the effect). So why not do that?

Adjustment layers can sometimes be used for sneaky AE workarounds. If you’re not familiar with these then I generally only recommend that Adjustment Layers are used when you want to affect everything below them, for global color correction for example or giving your footage a ‘look.’ Otherwise you’re going to go crazy trying to get your Adjustment Layers to behave the way you want them to.

I believe that what you’re asking for is impossible as AE exists today.

    Precompose doesnt work.

I have a composition of 100 layers and I want to control the color of 35 of those layers that are random spread in the middle of tthe 100 layers… so precomposition is no good because I want them to stay inbetween the other objects, not all in front or in the back…

Yes I can start to copy keyframes here and there but then when I want to change something its a nightmare…

It would be so sweet if I could just mark all the layers I want to control with say BROWN than a scipt on the adjustment layer opacity that says

    Expression
    on Adjustment layer opacity
(100% opacity on labeled layers BROWN), (0% opacity on all other)

You can apply a Hue/Saturation effect to each of the layers and have them animate through an expression. What you’re asking for doesn’t exist, so you need to think of a different way to do it.

ok, thanks. I suppose thats why people stick to node based programs like fusion and shake…

I will then wish for future AE versions or some plugin manufacturer to develop a kind of SMART ADJUSTMENTLAYER…
