Consolidating FCP projects with Media Manager
Hi there,
I’m working on:
FCP 5.1.4
OS10.4.8
2×2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
4GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMMI have 50x30min sequences I want to consolidate with media manager.
The media in the sequences are a mixture of DV pal captured material and quicktime files converted to DV PAL in Compressor from H.264 encoded movies.
When I consolidate the sequences I’ll often hit a snag where I’ll get an error on one of the media files, it either comes up with an error -34 or -36, and gives me the option to skip the file, try again or abort.
The only thing I can think of doing is aborting the process, opening up the problem file (which works perfectly otherwise), re-exporting the quicktime, reconnecting in the project, and trying again. Not ideal when the problem happens several times per sequence, and when there are 50 of them to do. I can’t really skip the files, as they are being consolidated for archiving purposes.
Is anyone familiar with this issue, or can advise me on what steps I can take?

You’ve gone farther than I have.
The Media Mangler is broken. You shouldn’t have to do anything but grab a cup of coffee and let it do it’s work. My experience has been even when it says it works–no errors–it doesn’t work. I’ve given up on trying to consolidate with FCP’s Media Manager. It’s pathetic. I use the Larry Jordan method.
So, if you’ve found some way that works at all, keep doing it! Just make sure when it’s done consolidating, that you can actually open up that consolidated project and everything is there in working order.Love,

If anyone is interested, I think I figured it out.
Some of the media files referenced in the project were viewed with their file extensions in the filenames. So when the file “video.mov” was copied by Media Manager multiple times, each duplicate was numbered as follows: “video.mov1”, “video.mov2” etc. Numbering the files at the end of the file extension changed the file type altogether, making those files unreadable by final cut.

I’ve run into the same problem. How can I change FCP so it won’t view the file names with extensions? Did you rename the file in FCP? Finder? Or something else entirely?
