Consolidate Media of Locked Picture
Posted by Ludmil Kazakov on August 8, 2020 at 10:29 pmI have 16TB of media transcoded into Avid. I need to consolidate only the media that is on the final sequence. I dont need new MXF files with handles, only the files copied that are in the sequence.. How can I do this?
If I generate new media with handles I cannot work with that media while the editor works with the original files. I am trying to avoid purchasing a big 16TB drive and would love to copy all the media used on a shuttle drive that will allow me to work remotely..
any ideas what I can do?

August 9, 2020 at 8:39 amYou should be able to consolidate with handles and edit with that media and if need be relink a sequence sent to you made from the pre consolidated media.
That’s a core MC function.
But of course if the other editor uses media outside you consolidated time codes you can’t relink. No easy way in Avid to “collect”
Only the used clips. But in the set bin display you can enable show sources (in a bin with just your sequence in it) you then get sub clips that show the used media but full master clips of the original sources.
Just consolidate the full masterclips to a new drive.Pat Horridge

August 9, 2020 at 1:47 pmthats exactly what I am trying to avoid, me working with consolidated media with handles and the editor working with the true master transcodes.. (the movie is almost done, but i will be working remotely cutting in VFX and new score so I dont need all the 16+TB of transcodes)
Is there really no way to media manage the MXF files used in a cut to a smaller shuttle drive?

August 9, 2020 at 2:11 pmAvid internal media management doesn’t have that function, never has.
Consolidation is Avids tool. And as I mentioned you can see the original source clips and consolidate them whole.
There are 3rd party tools that can search out the source files from a sequence but they all cost. But unless there are issues with the source metadata Avid should relink across original master clips and consolidated subclips.
If you have a sequence and you re-link as long as that media exists at that timecode Avid should relink to it. This happens hundred of times a week across the Post industry.

August 9, 2020 at 5:35 pmgot it.. I will give that a try.. I also noticed that in the bin display I can see the reference clips and some of them I can actually consolidate as an entire clip..
so my question is, if I work on a project with consolidated media with handles, and someone else with the entire media library (mxf transcodes) wants to open that project, would my consolidated project be offline for them? And If I work with the consolidated project the filenames add an .new extension and in that case would I have issues exporting for online in DaVinci..
thanks!

August 9, 2020 at 5:43 pmThe clip names are irrelevant. Otherwise naming clips during an edit would render the conform impossible.
Linking and conforms are based on the original source file name and the Timecode (you can bring up the source file and source path in the column headings) on Resolve you can also use the Reel as a linking method so some post houses populate that during ingest. But yes if you cut using consolidated media and send you cut to an editor who has the original Avid media it will either relink upon opening or you use the relink command.
I’d do a test to make sure first.

August 9, 2020 at 5:44 pmyes I am running a test now.. to be honest I wish Avid was little bit more up to date when it comes to re-linking and media managing but there is no perfect world in the post world so we all work with what we have and know ☺ thanks for your time!

August 9, 2020 at 7:27 pmImproved media management has been a feature request from me for over 15 years now.
Sadly for many many editors its just not important so it never gets pushed. But its a gaping hole in flexibility. That said most Post houses develop smart ways to manage media renaming media folders etc to achieve what they need and then they don’t even think about it any more.
Hope the tests go well.
