  • Connecting Zoom webinar to Youtube for private event – good idea?

Posted by Neil Orman on November 15, 2020 at 6:56 pm

Some colleagues are hosting a Zoom webinar that may have more attendees than their license can accommodate, and are asking if I can connect the event to Youtube, and also make the event private so only the intended audience can watch it (and possibly disable comments too). I manage our YT channel but have never helped with any live events, related to Zoom or otherwise. Is it possible? And if so, is Youtube really the best vehicle to achieve what they want here? For example our social media director mentioned he could also create a private Facebook ‘room’ that could achieve the same thing. But I’m happy to help on the YT end if it’s really a sensible option here. I’d appreciate any takes on that, or tips from anyone who’s done this.

    Thanks, Neil

While I have not done it, this is a common practice. When they schedule the webinar, there’s a choice to send to fb live, youtube live and antoher option I can’t remember. Once the webinar starts, you can send it to those other destinations. So start plenty early so you can get things configured. And practice, Practice, PRACTICE.

Zoom is not inherently HD, this must be requested well in advance and unless you are medical or first responder in nature, it may not happen for you event or at all. Zoom is 640 by default.

Thanks for the advice, Steve! I know you haven’t done this, but between the FB or Youtube Live options you mention, I’d be curious if you or others have thoughts on whether one is preferable? This person actually approached our social media director first on this, who sent her to me (the video producer), which I question the more I learn here. And for anyone who has done this, she mentioned that I could get a Youtube ‘token’ to give to her. Also not sure how that process works, so grateful for any tips if anyone knows anything.

A-Zoom Webinar session can stream directly to Facebook or YouTube. Please note, it can ONLY stream to one or the other, and cannot simultaneously stream to both platforms.

Warning for YouTube Live: We found that the YouTube Live feature will only work if your YouTube account is set to ‘classic mode’ and not the new ‘YouTube Studio (Beta).’ Make sure to make this tweak, before you hit the ‘Stream to YouTube’ button in Zoom.
