  • Confusion about rendered results files

I’m confused about 2 renders that I did. The project is 70 minutes long in PAL widescreen. I rendered it first using the GOOD setting for MPEG2 & the file size was 3.3 GB. The next day I re rendered it again this time using the BEST setting with dual pass VBR & progressive scan. The result came out at 2.2 GB.

I would have expected the second render to produce a slightly larger size than the first. The first rended look better than the second. Not being ceratin what bit rate the program had used I opened both files in VideReDo which was able to tell me that the bit rate for the first file was 8000 & only 6000 for the second. Again I would have expected that the first file should have had a lower bit rate. I’m pretty certain that I didn’t touch the bit rate settings for either pass.

Can any one explain this? Should I have done the second render using a 8000 setting? Since the files will easily fit on a single layer disk would I have achieved better results if I had set in minimum bitrate to 8000 as well?

Did you do the second render on a Tuesday? Tuesday renders always come out smaller 🙂

The bitrate controls the size of the file. I would expect a 3.3Gig file to have a higher bitrate than a 2.2 gig file – given that they’re both from the same source.

I use the bitrate chart in Vol 1 #7 of my newsletters for my MPEG2 rendering. It’s for NTSC but the PAL numbers would be similar.
