Confusion about new $299 Studio pricing
Posted by Tom Matthies on May 3, 2017 at 1:50 pmWith the new $299 pricing for the Resolve Studio version – is this for the Studio version of 12.5 or for the Beta Studio version of 14? And if it’s for 12.5, when the official version of 14 is released, will there be an upgrade path from version from 12.5? And is 14 the dongleless version? Just a little confused…

Asleep in the poppy field?
This issue is not settled.
Going forward, my impression is that (conceptually) the “paid” version of Resolve will cost $299US or whatever, and it carries forward in some way that resembles the current dongle-controlled Studio version. How current licensees convert their seat(s) to R14, cancel the dongle requirement, and then remain Studio-entitled is not clear.
There may be others, but I have grown quite accustomed to carrying the license with me if I need to work in a remote environment, control the future of the project, and who can modify it. It seems counter to the intent of the overall disruptive distribution model to seed the market with a very portable access control (the dongle) and then turn around and conceivably confine the installation to a SysID-licensed single computer. I don’t see many other ways, though, to confirm ownership.

May 3, 2017 at 7:01 pmI have two dongles for Resolve, two for Avid, and 1 for fusion (two if you count my old Eyeon dongle)
I just about always have 1 in my bag for working at home, or in the field. (except the last two times i needed it at home, and it was sitting on the coffee table at the office!)
I’m assuming BMD will adopt a software activation model like Avid and Autodesk have for some of their products.
Go through an activation software on the box, and either activate or deactivate your license over the internet.
The key is you do need the internet.Avids used to only allow you to activate it, so you had to remember to deactivate it before you turned the other box off, or you had to phone support for them to deactivate it. Not sure if that has changed or not, as again, i use dongles.
I’m pretty sure i can do either with my autodesk maya license. (tell it to deactivate one computer, and activate the one i’m on.)

May 8, 2017 at 4:37 amIt’s interesting to note that the cost of Fusion Studio is still $995.

May 8, 2017 at 5:00 amI don’t think they will lower it {hope I’m wrong} everything comparable is ither priced higher of on subscription
What I would like bmd to make is just a plain and simple motion graphic app and make a tab for it. Just normal stuff plus 3d titles objects and animation.Ricardo Marty

May 8, 2017 at 6:48 pmWell, I’ve tried the past three days to try and purchase DaVinci Resolve 12.5 Studio, with dongle, and everyone is Out Of Stock!
First I tried the BlackMagic Online retailers listed on their site, such as B&H Photo and Adorama, etc. Nope. Out of Stock, “don’t know when we will be getting some in (or even if we will?) . . . But it is at least listed at $299 now.
Then I tried some local stores (some just guys working out of their house), listed for my state, and the same story. Out of Stock and one said “oh, we don’t carry that anymore”. What?
Nobody really seems to care, is the feeling I get. Even BlackMagic, because they could have seen this chaos coming, one would think. Changing from dongle-based to license based, why didn’t they simply offer the newest 12.5.5.026 version also in a license based for example, with download and payment straight through BlackMagic?
So, does anyone know anything? I asked BlackMagic Support by email, haven’t received any reply yet. I called their 1-401 Support phone number, was put on hold, and hung up after 18 minutes waiting. Great service. Guess they don’t really want to sell it.

That hasn’t stopped them from dropping the price on Resolve. Hard to out guess where their pricing is going.
Unfortunately, I don’t think BMD does a lot of software creation, their model is to buy and tweak, so I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for them to build a new motion graphics app.
Fusion and Resolve in 1 package would be nice, but they may need to sell a few more seats before they can say it is paid for, and now able to redistribute at a lower price point.
If they want to spend some more money, go ask Avid how much they want for DS’s code.

May 9, 2017 at 6:44 pmYup. Waiting for delivery as well Although I didn’t get a back ordered notification from Full Compass in Madison. Guess I had better check to see of the payment has been applied already with no delivery date.

May 9, 2017 at 8:50 pmDropping the price of resolve affects the competition. Droping the price of fusion affects BMD.
BMD could makean “m.g.” from fusion while keeping Fusins.

Thanks for reaching out to us!!
Currently, the USB dongles are still required for the full version of Resolve.
A dongle-less version has not been released and we have no further information on how it might work, if implemented.
Hope this information has been helpful. Thanks again for reaching out to us!!Regards,
